Prof. Vanessa Smith van de Universiteit Gent heeft een onderzoek voorgesteld over de doeltreffendheid van videocapillaroscopie van de nagel bij de vroege detectie van systeemsclerose, een zeldzame auto-immuunaandoening die gekenmerkt wordt door het voorkomen van het syndroom van Raynaud. Spijtig genoeg is dit laatste niet typisch voor sclerodermie. Vroege screening zorgt voor een snelle opvolging van de patiënt, want indien er geen behandeling is van de sclerodermie als dusdanig, kunnen er complicaties ontstaan zoals pulmonale arteriële hypertensie.
